SB: mmSystem - Using Decompositional Semantics for Lexical Simplification
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper, we describe the system we submitted to the SemEval-2012 Lexical Simplification Task. Our system (mmSystem) combines word frequency with decompositional semantics criteria based on syntactic structure in order to rank candidate substitutes of lexical forms of arbitrary syntactic complexity (oneword, multi-word, etc.) in descending order of (cognitive) simplicity. We believe that the proposed approach might help to shed light on the interplay between linguistic features and lexical complexity in general.

A usage-based study of the verb 看 (see) in the Chinese bă-construction
The paper addresses the interface between lexical and constructional semantics in the Chinese băconstruction. Specifically, I focus on the distribution of the construction with the verb 看 (see) in its basic sense of physical vision. Under assumption of the affectedness constraint which is often stated for the bă-construction, the use of this verb would presumably lead to a semantic conflict bet...

متن کاملThe Effect of Reducing Lexical and Syntactic Complexity of Texts on Reading Comprehension
The present study investigated the effect of different types of text simplification (i.e., reducing the lexical and syntactic complexity of texts) on reading comprehension of English as a Foreign Language learners (EFL). Sixty female intermediate EFL learners from three intact classes in Tabarestan Language Institute in Tehran participated in the study. The intact classes were assigned to three...
متن کاملLexical Semantics and Selection of TAM in Bantu Languages: A Case of Semantic Classification of Kiswahili Verbs
The existing literature on Bantu verbal semantics demonstrated that inherent semantic content of verbs pairs directly with the selection of tense, aspect and modality formatives in Bantu languages like Chasu, Lucazi, Lusamia, and Shiyeyi. Thus, the gist of this paper is the articulation of semantic classification of verbs in Kiswahili based on the selection of TAM types. This is because the sem...
متن کاملIn defense of definitions
The arguments of Fodor, Garrett, Walker and Parkes [(1980) Against definitions, Cognition, 8, 263-367] are the source of widespread skepticism in cognitive science about lexical semantic structure. Whereas the thesis that lexical items, and the concepts they express, have decompositional structure (i.e. have significant constituents) was at one time “one of those ideas that hardly anybody [in t...
